SAP Hybris is an electronic commerce platform that allows its consumers to sell in the B2B and B2C markets effectively. In the last 8 years, the software has evolved significantly (now in version 5.5) and is now positioned as "an omnichannel commerce solution that helps customer engagement". In 2013, Hybris was acquired by SAP and was named leader by Forrester in the evaluation of B2B Q2 2015 trading suites. It has a truly global presence with more than 500 customers and can boast of names like Samsung, 3M, Vodafone, Oakley, Bridgestone, and Carphone Warehouse on your list. In the last 5 years, I have seen a significant growth in market share and adoption by some very high profile customers.
Hybris core is an e-commerce platform, but it has several outstanding features that are based on this and allow you to develop a complete omnichannel solution. This means that you can sell online, mobile, in the store and through a contact center. One of the key pieces of the suite is the Product Content Management (PCM) module. This allows you to develop an attractive experience for the customer by putting the product at the center of the sale. By presenting rich and consistent content and delivering images, videos and product data from a single location, you have the ability to go to market faster. This also allows marketing departments to improve SEO and provide localized content for international campaigns. A central order management system and a module to control billing deliver additional business functions.
Hybris is a Java-based application and is usually hosted as part of a 3-tier architecture consisting of web, application and database layers. Web servers, located in a DMZ, will normally redirect traffic to application servers. The database platform can consist of any SQL-based solution but, in general, MySQL is used for small and medium enterprises and Oracle for more enterprise implementations. Hybris works well in a virtualized environment with control over server resources. This flexibility to quickly implement new instances provides the scalability to face the challenges of modern electronic commerce. As in any business platform, non-production environments often include one or more of staging, UAT, smoke, SIT, and development.
