Why Web API ?

Before web API technology every developer used to communicate with multiple services over the internet by using following technology like web services, WCF, COM, COM+,DCOM,.NET remoting.
All the technology works based on Service Oriented Architecture which create communication between service provider and service consumer which helpes to communicate with different types of applications like web, mobile based, standalone applications and many more.

applications or systems.

WCF:-
Used-To develop SOAP based services and binding
Protocol-TCP/HTTP/HTTPS/MSMQ
Return Type-XML
Host Server-IIS,Self hosting, WAS,Windows Service hosting

What IS WEB API:-

It is open source a platform for building REST-ful services and accessed using HTTP protocol.
Web API is a web development concept which used for client-side web application and server-side web applications.
Developer can build web api by any technology like .net,java,php and so on.

.NET Framework WEB API-

1. ASP.NET WEB API is a framework for building web APIs on top of the .NET Framework.
2. Web API is like a web service or WCF service but only supports only HTTP protocol
3. Wep API is built on top of ASP.NET and supports request and response pipeline.
4. ASP.NET WEB API maps HTTP verbs to method names.
5. ASP.NET WEB API supports different formats of response like xml,json and so on.
6. Similar to WCF ASP.NET WEB API can be hosted on IIS,SELF hosted.
